Garth Walker - bio image

“One man’s search for a boerewors roll. The ijusi Story”

In over forty years as a professional graphic designer, Garth Walker has designed for most of South Africa’s best-known corporate and consumer brands.

However, his personal interest lies in the idea of “what makes me African – and what does that look like?” Beginning in the early 1980s Garth started documenting street and township vernacular design, architecture, and craft. What became the ‘ijusi archive’, now numbers in the thousands – and formed the basis for the idea to publish an experimental graphics magazine. In 1994, following SA’s first democratic elections, issue #1 of ijusi was published to worldwide acclaim. The publication is still going strong after 34 issues (and counting) and has been widely exhibited globally in solo and group exhibitions.

Garth’s work is represented or featured in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Minneapolis Art Institute, International Center of Photography, National Portrait Gallery (UK), Boston Institute of Contemporary Art, Biblioteque Nationale de France, The Victoria & Albert Museum, The Smithsonian, Wits Art Museum, Stellenbosch University, and numerous university and academic collections worldwide. His published work in books and magazines numbers in the hundreds.

Garth is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), British Design & Art Direction (D&AD), and a Life Member of The Type Directors Club New York (TDC)

Things to know about your ijusigraphics print

  • ijusi magazine prints are size A3 (the original ijusi magazine print size) and A2 for Limited edition prints. A3 paper trim size is 420 x 300mm or 11.7 x 16.5 inches (HxW) in portrait or landscape format depending on the image orientation. The image falls within these dimensions so as to allow for the chop mark and sufficient border for matting and/or framing. A2 paper trim size is 594 x 420mm or 23.4 x 16.5 inches (HxW) with the image area falling within these measurements.
  • Choose your print framed or unframed for the ijusi prints only (see below for more details)
  • ijusi uses the same print reproduction technology as the world’s major art museums
  • Every print is authenticated with our 100% ijusi chop mark (embossed stamp)

Technical Stuff

Each ijusi print is digitally printed on a state-of-the-art large-format technical printer. The UV stable inks are ultra-violet light resistant and are guaranteed not to fade or discolour over time (in normal domestic use)

Paper Stock

Fibre/cotton/rag paper as required for museum grade archival quality reproduction. Natural White (so just off a bright white) stock

Authentication (the ijusi Guarantee)

Every print is despatched with an ‘ijusi authentication’ –  a ‘blind-stamped chop mark’ (embossed roundel) so as to certify the print is 100% genuine. This is the certification method used by master printers worldwide

Our printer, framer, pack & ship partner

We use the services of Orms in Cape Town exclusively as our technical partner. Orms enjoys a global reputation and over 30 years of experience in the photographic, digital printing, framing, and installation sector. Simply, they are the best at what they do – that’s why we partner with them

ijusi Magazine Framed Print Options at size A3

Should you select to have your chosen print framed, we offer three frame options:

  1. natural timber frame (a blonde-wood frame)
  2. matt black frame
  3. matt white frame

Each frame has a slightly beveled profile when seen front-on (see examples). The prints are mounted flush with the frame edge and then glazed. Frame depth is approximately 25mm or 1 inch

Unframed Prints

The finished print is rolled and inserted into a heavy-duty cardboard core (tube) and sealed with plastic end-caps (both ends). The core (cardboard tube) is 50 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm ensuring the print is not too tightly rolled. Once you receive your print you can then visit your framer and discuss how you would like it framed – and select your choice of frame and mount
